So, why did I decide to write Corporate Zombie Survival Guide?
In a world where many people see their jobs as a miserable means to an end, it’s easy to see room for improvement. As someone who has had the privilege of working both in the corporate world as a seasoned IT consultant and in the entertainment world as a writer, director, and even an actor, I’ve seen a stunning comparison between the rules of surviving a zombie apocalypse and succeeding in business.
As the creator of the feature film Hell’s Kitty (now available on Amazon) and a frequent contributor to The Horror Zine, I know a thing or two about horror, having worked with some of the most iconic names in the genre. This unique perspective has allowed me to draw startling comparisons between zombie lore and the way people, especially creatives, are struggling to work and make a decent living today.
After quitting my job as an Associate Director for ESPN, I managed to triple my salary as an IT consultant for one of the biggest companies in the world, GE. This career shift, while different from my initial aspirations in sports television, provided exactly what I needed to pursue my creative passions.
I spent my time as a consultant saving money, writing scripts, recording albums, and making movies. All the while, I watched other artist friends struggle in dead-end jobs that demanded too much time and offered little vacation. I saw others who “sold out” for corporate careers, only to become trapped in endless politics and boring work they mostly hated.
I managed to keep a healthy distance from both extremes, still collecting a steady paycheck from corporate America. More importantly, I made sure to give myself time for what I lovingly refer to as life’s essential amino acids: those things you need to feed your soul to give your life meaning. This last phase is truly heaven on earth. Making money doing something that gives your life meaning is nothing short of sublime. If you only have one life to live, you should consider your life choices carefully.
At its core, this is about helping people create a more balanced lifestyle, with both the time and money to live authentically. Don’t expect us to bullshit you about how you need to accomplish this. It’s not a Disney world (I should know, I’ve written for Disney, too); it’s more like a world brought to you by George A. Romero, whether you care to admit it or not. Let that sink in before the zombies crack open your skull to eat your brain, and you just might have a shot.

“I want to change the way the world does business. First, by helping people to survive the cutthroat, post-apocalyptic corporate landscape. Second, I want to teach people to thrive so that they can live a more fulfilling life; eventually, taking back the world from the corporate zombies.” – Nicholas Tana, Author
